Achieving the right torque is one of the most critical steps when working with bolted connections. With proper and regular calibration, you ensure that the values given by your tools and gauges are true and reliable.
For each bolt and screw connection, it is possible to calculate the optimal torque based on the size, model and strength class of the fasteners used. Properly set torque ensures that the compressive force in joint is sufficient, in addition to which the nuts and bolts will withstand the tension without damage.
However, high utilization, age, and inadequate storage conditions reduce the accuracy of the torque achieved with tightening tools. Inaccurate tightening can negatively affect the quality of production, and in the worst cases, they can also cause serious hazards. However, disadvantages due to incorrect torques can be avoided by regular calibrations and maintenance of tools.
How often should torque tools be calibrated?
Companies are increasingly required to provide information on how they ensure, that their tools meet the standards and accuracy requirements. Torque wrenches and spanners calibrated at regular intervals are an indication of the reliability and regularity of the company’s operations. Calibration certificates are a transparent and easy way to prove that the tools meet all the requirements set for them.
However, variables such as usage make it difficult to determine accurate intervals for calibration. Equipment manufacturers recommend that torque tool re-calibrations should be performed at least annually to ensure that tools meet the accuracy requirements. Also other significant risks to tool performance, such as leaking seals or cracks, can be detected by regular calibrations.
Irregular calibration also impairs tool traceability. For example, documentation of the calibration methods and equipment used should also be available at subsequent calibrations. This information can be used to ensure that the results obtained at other locations with different devices and methods are comparable.
The performance and accuracy requirements of hydraulic wrenches should be ensured with annual calibration and maintenance procedures.
Versatile calibration services easily from Haitor
Haitor’s calibration laboratory has been granted the only accreditation for torque in Finland which meets the SFS-EN ISO / IEC 17025: 2017 requirement. Accreditation is a procedure based on international criteria for proving the competence of the operator and the accuracy of the results and certificates provided. Accreditation requires us to continuously maintain and develop standardized processes. The standard compliance of our operations is monitored through FINAS – the national accreditation body in Finland – and its annual audit.
The accreditation also applies to field-calibrated hydraulic torque wrenches and manual torque wrenches. This enables calibration procedures to be done directly in torque tool applications which significantly facilitates the entire calibration process. Our mobile maintenance and calibration service is not only the fastest, but also the most cost-effective way to calibrate your torque tools.
